Overview

Osaka has a saying: 'kuidaore' — eat until you drop. The city takes its food identity seriously, and it's earned. Osaka people are warmer and more openly funny than anywhere else in Japan — strangers will talk to you on trains, restaurant owners will come out of the kitchen to ask if you liked it. It's a complete contrast to the formality of Kyoto, just 15 minutes away. Two to three days is right; stay in Namba or Shinsaibashi for the best street food access.

The quintessential Osaka greeting. Locals use it constantly. Say it back and watch their face light up.

グルメ

Must Eat in Osaka

Takoyaki

たこ焼き

Osaka invented these octopus-filled batter balls. Eaten with mayo, bonito flakes, and a sweet brown sauce. Get them fresh, they burn your tongue.

Where: Wanaka (Namba) · Takoyaki Juhachiban (Dotonbori)

budget

¥500–¥900 (8 pieces)

Okonomiyaki

お好み焼き

Osaka-style: all ingredients mixed into the batter, not layered. Cooked on a griddle at your table. Order from the menu or just point.

Where: Mizuno (Dotonbori) · Chibo (Shinsaibashi)

budget

¥1,000–¥2,000

Kushikatsu

串カツ

Deep-fried skewers of meat, seafood, and vegetables, dipped in communal sauce. The rule: never double-dip. The punishment: shame.

Where: Daruma (Shinsekai) · any Shinsekai alley restaurant

budget

¥100–¥250 per skewer

Ramen (Osaka-style)

ラーメン

Osaka's ramen is lighter than Tokyo's — usually soy or chicken-based, not as rich. But the noodle shops are excellent value.

Where: Kinryu Ramen (Dotonbori — open 24h) · Ichiran locations

budget

¥800–¥1,400

Negiyaki

ねぎ焼き

A slimmer, spring onion-heavy pancake — less doughy than okonomiyaki, almost crepe-like. Often overlooked by tourists.

Where: Yamamoto (Namba) — the defining Osaka negiyaki shop

budget

¥900–¥1,500

Practical Tips

The Osaka Amazing Pass (¥2,800/day) includes unlimited metro rides and free entry to 40+ attractions.

Dotonbori is best walked at night — the neon reflects on the canal and everything looks cinematic.

Osaka is notably cheaper than Tokyo for food. A great meal is easy to find under ¥1,500.

Namba and Shinsaibashi are the best areas to stay — everything is walkable from there at night.
